Why Does the New Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Trailer Sound So Campy?

I’m not quite sure what to make of the new trailer for the remake of Final Fantasy XII, now titled Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, as it presents the game’s Gambit System with some of the campiest and hammy dialog voicing over the video trying to hype and praise the system for the viewer.

I don’t mind gaming companies doing this or hyping the features of their games, and I think most of the information the speaker provided in the video is informational and useful; I just don’t think that all the gushing and swooning was necessary to communicate how incredible the Gambit System is to the game. Really, it seemed sophomoric and comic than anything else.

It just seems that gaming companies, or rather the sections of these companies in charge of marketing these games, still see gamers and children, or worst, needy, thirsty loners who need this kind of campaign to entice us to buy games. Please listen and trust me when I say that the majority of the people you are marketing your games to, even those younger than a certain mature age, understand what is going on in these games and don’t need to be pandered, talked down to, or even played up to as if we didn’t know what was going on. Talk to us like mature consumers and we’ll respect you a little more for it.

Petty issues aside, I am pretty excited to see Final Fantasy XII getting an HD remake. It was one of my favorite games in the Final Fantasy series and I really liked the characters, setting, gameplay and music featured in the game. Having a chance to play one of the favorite games in full HD is a very exciting prospect and I can’t wait to play it when it releases this July 11th for the PlayStation 4.
