First Impression: Marvel/Netflix The Punisher

Okay, so here’s hoping that the new Marvel/Netflix series, The Punisher, brings the Marvel Netflix universe back to some prominence. Luke Cage was kind of lukewarm, Iron Fist was just cold, and The Defenders, while it did have some interesting moments, didn’t quite live up to the hype. But after seeing the official trailer for The Punisher series, starring John Bernthal, I am getting some really good feelings from it. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out below:

I mean, seriously – how bad ass was that trailer? At least from what we’ve seen in the trailer so far, it looks as though this new Punisher series won’t be holding back on the violence. And I think that anything less than an all out violent series wouldn’t be doing the character any justice. Of course, hopefully The Punisher series will also have a great story and better character development than past Punisher appearances on film, but to make this series a perfect fit for the character of Frank Castle, The Punisher, it needs a combination of great storytelling, great character progression, and violence.

The two Daredevil seasons and the Jessica Jones series had a great combination of storytelling and characters, and did deliver on the action – but The Punisher is the kind of character almost defined by the action and violence that the character has delivered for years in his comic book incarnation.

The Punisher is set to debut on Netflix later 2017 with 13 episodes and stars John Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher, Ben Barnes as Billy Russo (Jigsaw), Ebon Moss-Bachrach as David Lieberman/Micro, Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, with guest appearances by Rob Morgan and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
