A Grammy-nominated songwriter and acclaimed indie-folk artist, Michael Logen has spent more than a decade leaving his mark in the writing room, the recording studio, and onstage.
Solo records like Logen’s most recent titled New Medicine show the full range of his abilities, pairing his lyric-driven songwriting chops with acoustic-based arrangements, sweeping pop hooks, gorgeous vocals, and cameos from artists like Liz Longley, Kim Richey and Ruby Amanfu. Since the album’s release, Logen’s songs have continued to find a home in unexpected places; popping up in episodes of seven different television shows including Nashville, Suits, Parenthood, and The Fosters while also landing in a Folgers Coffee commercial currently airing during the Winter Olympics.
Logen isn’t the only artist performing his songs. Pop artists, folksingers, bluesmen, bluegrass acts, and Americana icons have all performed tracks penned by Michael — proof that Logen’s songwriting reaches across genres, generations, and gender lines. The Greencards earned a Grammy nomination for the band’s 2013 album, Sweetheart of the Sun, whose track list included the Logen original “Ocean Floor”. Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson cut Logen’s “Breaking Your Own Heart” on her Grammy-winning record Stronger and the recently released feature film Forever My Girl features his track “Wild And Free”, performed by Destin Bennett on the top-selling movie soundtrack. Mat Kearney, Jonny Lang, Will Hoge, Sister Hazel, and more than a dozen others have recorded Logen’s music, too, making him one of the Nashville’s most sought-after writers for artists across multiple genres.
That said, this songwriter saves some of his best material for himself. Back on dry land after performing on the 2018 Cayamo Cruise, Logen will perform select concert dates throughout the spring — including an appearance at this year’s Folk Alliance Festival in Kansas City — while also focusing on the recording sessions for his follow-up to New Medicine. The upcoming album will double as his third solo release, with a stripped-back sound that mirrors the acoustic nature of Logen’s solo shows.
The first single from the offering, titled “Sweet Salvation”, drops February 23rd and can be previewed here (please do not post): https://tinyurl.com/ml-sweet-salvation.
“Sweet Salvation” will be featured in the February 27th episode of The Fosters on Freeform-TV.
“I’ve always moved between an acoustic sound and a more produced, polished folk-pop direction,” says the Pennsylvania native, whose parents raised him on a mix of country crooners and iconic folk singers. “But lately, I feel myself heading back toward the acoustic-based Americana stuff. I want to return to the things I grew up listening to and loving.”
