The 40 Films I Want To See In 2019 – Part 4

By now, I hope that you have read Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 of this four-part series before you start reading this entry, but even if you haven’t, I want to thank you for reading this part and finding out the last ten films releasing in 2019 that I really am anticipating watching when they come out. This last part of the list covers the months of September through December and a whole slew of action, animated, and family films. So, please sit back and enjoy Part 4 of “The 40 Films I Want to See in 2019”.

It – Chapter Two

Release date: September 6
Directed by: Andy Muschietti
Produced by: New Line Cinema, Vertigo Entertainment, Rideback, KatzSmith Productions
Distributed by: Warner Bros Pictures
Genre: Supernatural Horror
Starring: James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Jay Ryan, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone, Andy Bean, Bill Skarsgård

While I hope that we see the child actors from It appear in this sequel, I am excited to see It – Chapter Two and see what this amazing cast can do with the story. If director Andy Muschietti can deliver on half the scares and thrills of the first film, I’d say we’re in for one hell of a follow up.

Joker

Release date: October 4
Directed by: Todd Phillips
Produced by: Village Roadshow Pictures, Bron Creative, DC Films, Joint Effort Productions, Sikelia Productions
Distributed by: Warner Bros Pictures
Genre: Crime Drama
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, Shea Whigham

I am a bit split on this Joker film. On the one hand, I am not sure about director Todd Phillips as I have not been a big fan of his previous works as a director. But, this is another comic book film, and I am interested in seeing what Joaquin Phoenix can do to bring this version of the Joker to life. I’m not sure about the origin story aspect, but just knowing that Phoenix is in the lead role is semi-comforting.

The Addams Family

Release date: October 11
Directed by: Conrad Vernon, Greg Tiernan
Produced by: Nitrogen Studios, Cinesite Studios, The Jackal Group
Distributed by: Mtero-Goldwyn-Mayer
Genre: Computer Animated Comedy
Starring: Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Elsie Fisher, Aimee Garcia

As a fan of the original Addams Family TV series and the previous two Addams Family films led by star Raul Julia, I am super excited to see what this new Addams Family animated film will be like. I am especially excited since Oscar Issac is cast as the voice of Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, and Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday.

Zombieland Too

Release date: October 11
Directed by: Ruben Fleischer
Produced by: Relativity Media
Distributed by: Columbia Pictures
Genre: Comedy Horror
Starring: Jessie Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Zoey Deutch, Avan Jogia

All I have to say about Zombieland Too finally coming out in 2019 is it’s about damn time. The first Zombieland film was one of my favorite comedy horror films of the last ten years. Now, ten years later, the story will continue, and I really want to see where the characters of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock end up after so long a time away from them.

Terminator 6

Release date: November 1
Directed by: Tim Miller
Produced by: Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Skydance Media, Lightstorm Entertainment, Tencent Pictures
Distributed by: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Sci-Fi Action
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna, Natalia Reyes, Diego Boneta, Jude Collie, Enrique Arce

I know a lot of people have been turned off to the Terminator series of films after the last several films in the series have been, well, quite horrendous to be honest. But with James Cameron actively producing and being involved with Terminator 6, along with Deadpool director Tim Miller directing the film, and I am cautiously optimistic that this film will at least be better than the last three in the series.

Kingsman: The Great Game

Release date: November 8
Directed by: Matthew Vaughn
Produced by: 20th Century Fox, Marv Films
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Action Adventure Comedy
Starring: Daniel Bruhl, Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance, Harris Dickinson, Rhys Ifans

I know some fans of the Kingsman series are worried that Kingsman: The Great Game is a prequel, telling the story of the formation of the group – but I think this could be a fun and adventurous film that explores the history and legacy of the group and brings viewers closer to the inner workings of the Kingsman society.

Midway

Release date: November 8
Directed by: Roland Emmerich
Produced by: Bona Film Group, Centropolis Entertainment, Providence Entertainment, Starlight Culture Entertainment, The Mark Gordon Company
Distributed by: Lionsgate
Genre: Historical Action Drana
Starring: Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Mandy Moore, Patrick Wilson, Ed Skrein, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Dennis Quaid, Tadanobu Asano, Etsushi Toyokawa

Oy! Here is another film that I really want to see but I have some pretty severe reservations about. As much as I love historical war films, and you don’t get much more epic than the World War II Battle of Midway, I just don’t see this film not being bogged down by the stylings of director Roland Emmerich. If he can manage to keep some of his directorial extravagances at bay, Midway might just be a half decent film. But we’ll see about that.

Frozen 2

Release date: November 22
Directed by: Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck
Produced by: Walt Disney Animation Studios
Distributed by: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Genre: Computer-Animated Musical Fantasy
Starring: Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Evan Rachel Wood, Sterling K. Brown

Of all the animated films being released in 2019, I would have to say that I am most excited about Frozen 2. As passé as it might be to be a Frozen fan today, there is no denying that Disney managed to create a cultural phenomenon when they released the first film in 2013. And I and my family where happily caught up in that phenomena and still to this day. So, yeah – I want to see Frozen 2. So very, very much.

Jumanji 3

Release date: December 13
Directed by: Jake Kasdan
Produced by: Columbia Pictures, Seven Bucks Productions
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Releasing
Genre: Action Adventure Fantasy Comedy
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Awkwafina, Danny DeVito

I’ll admit; I was very, very surprised by how much I liked Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I’ll even go as far as to say that it was a far superior film to the original Jumanji. So, it’s should be no surprise to find out that I am excited to see what will happen in Jumanji 3 (or whatever name this film will have when it is nearing release). I mean, as long as it retains the same humor and appeal that the last film had, this will be another blockbuster film.

Star Wars: Episode IX

Release date: December 20
Directed by: J. J. Abrams
Produced by: Lucasfilm Ltd., Bad Robot Productions
Distributed by: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Genre: Epic Sci-Fi Space Opera
Starring: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, Carrie Fisher, Jimmy Vee, Greg Grunberg, Dominic Monaghan, Matt Smith, Brian Herring

Just to get this out of the way: I could give a damn what the haters think – I love what Star Wars has become and the stories they have told with their last four films (The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, and Solo). It’s opened up the lore of the Star Wars universe the way I always expected it would and the way it should be considering some of the stories that used to exist in the old Extended Universe. So, it should be no surprise that Star Wars: Episode IX is one of the films I am excitedly anticipating in 2019.
